ABSTRACT

Isla Arena is located in the coordinate 20° 70´ N - 90° 45´ W, from Campeche, Mexico. In these estuaries, the ocean mixes with fresh water, and ecosystems are concentrated where petenes and pink flamingos proliferate. Crustaceans and mollusks abound in the sea. Despite its enormous marine wealth, there are no studies carried out on which halophilic microorganisms are present in these waters. In this work, the diversity and structure of the microbial community was investigated through a metagenomics approach and corroborated for sequencing of 16S rRNA genes. It was found that the phylum Fimicutes predominates with more than 50%, in almost the same proportion of the class Bacilli and with almost 41% of relative abundance of the order Bacillales. The sequencing results showed that one of the samples presented a high percentage of similarity (99.75%) using the Nucleotide BLAST program with a peculiar microorganism: Bacillus subtilis. This microorganism is one of the best characterized bacteria among the gram-positive ones. Our results demonstrate that B. subtilis can be an efficient source of proteases, lipases and cellulases, from halophilic microbial communities located in poorly explored areas.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Serological controls for diseases of viral origin in animal production systems and the identification of factors associated with infections are decisive elements to establish prevention and control measures. The aim of this study was to establish the serological status for Bovine Viral Diarrhea (BVD) and Enzootic Bovine Leukemia (EBL) viruses in Blanco Orejinegro (BON) cattle from Colombia, and to identify the factors associated with seropositivity. A cross-sectional study was conducted with a total of 498 animals of all age groups and physiological states of the BON breed were selected, belonging to 14 herds located in 6 states of Colombia, in which a survey with 27 questions was conducted. By means of the chi-square test, possible factors associated with seropositivity against the 2 viruses were identified. A sample of 4 ml of blood was taken from each animal to extract plasma and make indirect Elisa tests to detect antibodies against both pathogens. General seropositivity of 27,1% was obtained for EBL, finding as factors associated with seropositivity the inadequate disposition of placental tissues after delivery of the cows and the non-performance of serological tests on new animals entering the herd. For BVD, seropositivity obtained was 50,6%, and the factors associated with seropositivity identified were having had a history of the disease in the herd, and using semen from bulls that are not known to be free for the infection. We suggest establishing control measures considering the factors associated with each viral infection to limit their expansion in the BON cattle production systems of Colombia.

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Foot disease is one of the most difficult syndromes to control in the dairy industry. The goal of this study was to quantify the prevalence of foot disease, evaluating its association with factors such as race, calving order and weight. This is a retrospective study using the health and production records of a dairy herd located in the high tropics of Colombia. The racial components present were F1 Holstein x Blanco Orejinegro, 3/4 Holstein 1/4 Blanco Orejinegro, 5/8 Holstein 3/8 Blanco Orejinegro, Holstein 100%. 6 delivery orders were considered. The variable foot disease presents a binomial distribution. The effect of the factors was verified using a generalized linear model, by means of a logistic regression (PROC GENMOD SAS version 9.4). In the event of significant differences, the SAS LSMEANS procedure (version 9.4) and an Odds Ratio were applied between the levels that presented significance. The prevalence of foot disease in the herd was 10,55%. The risk factors considered were statistically significant: racial component (p < 0,0009), calving order (p < 0,0001) and average weight of the cows (p < 0,0001). An increase in the prevalence of the disease was observed associated with the Holstein breed, high calving order and low body weight. The prevalence of foot disease was higher in pure Holstein cows and lower in Holstein cows crossed with Blanco Orejinegro due to the resistance due to heterosis that the creole breed contributes. The increase in the delivery order as well as the low weight are related to a higher prevalence of this disease.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Salt water recirculation systems using automatic feeders are a new frontier for marine aquaculture. It is possible to decrease the vulnerability of the traditional fish farming in open systems and reduce wasteful feeding and discharge of effluents, as well as increase the economic returns. An experiment with common snook fingerings (4.31 ± 1.42 g and 8.4 ± 1.0 cm) was performed. Three feeding treatments were evaluated: six, twelve and eighteen feeding times per day. Each treatment had three replications. Among the three tested frequencies (fed 6, 12 and 18 times a day), the feeding frequency of 12 times per day (every two hours) showed the best values of the parameters evaluated for production performance. The final weight values, condition factor, specific growth rate and daily weight gain of the treatment 12 feeding times per day were all significantly higher than the lower and higher frequencies. Our results demonstrate that high feeding frequency is not synonymous of higher performance, but is extremely necessary to find out the best range for the target species. Besides, this relationship between feeding frequency and growth performance might change over weight range. Therefore, future studies should address higher weight ranges for comparison to our results.

ABSTRACT

Abstract Fish-eating in bats evolved independently in Myotis vivesi (Vespertillionidae) and Noctilio leporinus (Noctilionidae). We compared cranial morphological characters and bite force between these species to test the existence of evolutionary parallelism in piscivory. We collected cranial distances of M. vivesi, two related insectivorous bats (M. velifer and M. keaysi), two facultatively piscivorous bats (M. daubentonii and M. capaccinii), and N. leporinus. We analyzed morphometric data applying multivariate methods to test for differences among the six species. We also measured bite force in M. vivesi and evaluated if this value was well predicted by its cranial size. Both piscivorous species were morphologically different from the facultatively piscivorous and insectivorous species, and skull size had a significant contribution to this difference. However, we did not find morphological and functional similarities that could be interpreted as parallelisms between M. vivesi and N. leporinus. These two piscivorous species differed significantly in cranial measurements and in bite force. Bite force measured for M. vivesi was well predicted by skull size. Piscivory in M. vivesi might be associated to the existence of a vertically displaced temporal muscle and an increase in gape angle that allows a moderate bite force to process food.(AU)

ABSTRACT

ABSTRACT Nasal T-cell / NK lymphoma is an uncommon aggressive neoplasm with male predilection. It represents 1.5% of the total number of non-Hodgkin's lymphomas, the most affected age group is 40-80 years. Its etiology is unknown but has been associated with the Epstein Barr virus. We present the case of a female patient of 40 years, with pain and induration of the right nostril associated with fetid secretion, seropurulent of 3 months of evolution. Histopathological study, reports T-cell / NK nasal lymphoma. The patient receives chemotherapy, with substantial clinical improvement. T / NK lymphoma is a neoplasm with predominant non-specific symptomatology, affecting the nasopharynx, tonsils and base of the tongue. Among the manifestations we find sore throat, nasal obstruction, rhinorrhea, epistaxis and headache. Diagnosis is suspected with imaging, but histological confirmation with immunohistochemical markers CD45Ro, CD43, CD3, CD2, CD45Ro, among others is required. Many cases are usually detected in the late phase, when radiological signs of bone destruction are already visible. The differential diagnosis includes infectious or inflammatory lesions, the fungal ball was the initial diagnosis made in this patient. Treatment is usually done with radiotherapy and chemotherapy.

ABSTRACT

Objective: We present a clinical case with diagnosis of an asymptomatic nonfunctional adrenal incidentaloma, in which we discuss the clinical implications and the approach. Clinical case: Male patient, 53 years old with an accidental sonographic finding, characterized by a hypoechoic image of well-defined contours in the right adrenal gland of less than 2 cm. The hormonal test showed no adrenal hyperfunctioning. Laparoscopic adrenalectomy technique is performed with 4 trocars with complete excision of the lesion. The patient presented good postoperative evolution. Results: The pathology study showed a well-defined and benign tumor lesion of the adrenal gland, being similar to the fascicular zone and cortical hyperplasia next to it. The diagnosis is a non-functioning adenoma of the adrenal gland derived from the fascicular zone. Conclusion: Given the finding of an adrenal mass greater than 1 cm mass corresponds perform a hormonal identification and risk assessment of malignancy in patients, which with imaging parameters (echogenicity, bilateralism and the adjacent commitment) and symptoms presented allow to identify the complications in the management and prognosis of the patient. The differential diagnosis of adrenal adenomas is based on the hormonal evaluation, radiological knowledge and the commitment of the injury.

ABSTRACT

The polyomavirus are a family of opportunistic virus, which belongs to the JC virus whose primary manifestation is the Progressive Multifocal Leukoencephalopathy and neuronopathy of granulosa cells. Recently given the use of PCR for BK virus in transplant patients have also been described CNS pathologies in relation to this, and most frequent encephalitis and leukoencephalopathy. Each entity has a compatible clinical and genetic testing have allowed a diagnosis of high specificity, however the RNM is the great diagnostic pillar in these pathologies, allowing differentiate the different entities, the progression of lesions and response to treatment, especially in cases where it is indicated antiretroviral therapy, as gadolinium enhancement and mass effect may suggest Syndrome Immune and worse prognosis.

ABSTRACT

To report a case of basal cell adenoma in an adult patient. Introduction: The basal cell adenoma is a rare tumor, it represents the 1-2percent of the major salivary gland tumors. It has a low malignancy rate and a good prognosis, but it has high recurrency. It is tipically presented during the fifth decade of life, and its usually as a firm and movable mass of slow growth. Case Report: A 58-year-old man with a left parotid tumor of 4 months of evolution, with no other symptoms. A total parotidectomy is performed without any incidents, or sequels. The deferred biopsy showed a basal cell adenoma. Discussion: The histopathological analysis is essential for the differential diagnosis with malignant tumors. As there are case reports that shows malignancy of the basal cell adenoma the surgical excision has become the treatment of choice, along with a patient follow-up...

ABSTRACT

Objective. This study was performed to evaluate the effect of the addition of proteins on the post-thawing viability of spermatozoa. Materials and methods. Spermatozoa were frozen with two different media: Citrate-fructose and Bioxcell®. The isolation of seminal plasma proteins of low molecular weight was performed through low pressure liquid chromatography. It was determined that the proteins of interest eluted in fractions 21-25, and two dimensional electrophoresis was performed. Thawed sperm was incubated at 37°C for one hour with 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2.0 mg of 21-25 fraction protein. Two additional treatments were included: one with seminal plasma total protein, and another one without protein. Results. Two dimensional electrophoresis of protein confirmed the presence of two bands of 14 and 16 kDa and seven spots with iso-electric points between 5.0 - 5.5 respectively. Incubation of the spermatozoa with the 21-25 fraction showed that sperm viability increases by 20% with doses of 1 and 1.5 mg of protein/106 spermatozoa in the citrate-fructose medium, and 25% with 0.5 mg of protein/106 spermatozoa in Bioxcell® medium. A positive effect in sperm viability was demonstrated although it depends on the doses of protein and the cryopreservation medium used. Conclusions. This investigation suggests that the use of seminal plasma proteins can be useful for reducing the harmful effect on sperm cryopreservation.

ABSTRACT

Objective: To evaluate the association between Escherischia Coli (E. Coli) and Klebsiella spp bacteremia, both of which produce Extended Spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBL), and the use of third generation cephalos-porines (TGC) during 30 days prior to the development of the infection. Patients and Methods: Case study of all patients hospitalized between 2004 and 2007 at Hospital de Niños Roberto del Río, who presented E. coli y Klebsiella spp bacteremia. Results: 212 episodes of E. coli o Klebsiella spp bacteremias were found; 205 contained all necessary data, 47 of which were cases and 158 were controls. The use of TGC showed a statistically significant correlation with the finding of ESBL in those patients' bacteremias (OR 2,5; IC95 percent 1,26-5). In addition, an independent statistically significant association was found with hospital acquired infections (OR 8,2; IC95 percent 2,7-27,1), and the use of Central Venous Catheter (OR 38,9; IC95 percent 14,3-106,0) became close to statistical significance. Conclusions: This study shows a statistically significant association between ESBL bacteremias and use of TGC within 30 days prior to the infection, confirming other literature reports.

ABSTRACT

Background & objective: There are few reports of Coccus nucifera (Palmae) infestation by triatomines (Hemiptera, Reduviidae, Triatominae), vectors of Trypanosoma cruzi (Kinetoplastida: Trypanosomatidae), the causal agent of American Trypanosomiasis. The aim of this study was to determine if this palm is an appropriate ecotope for Rhodnius prolixus and Triatoma maculata, the main vectors in Venezuela. Methods: Dry and green leaves, humid debris, interfoliaceus meshes and bracts from C. nucifera from north-eastern Venezuela were examined for the presence of triatomines. Samples of the intestinal content of vectors, macerated in isotonic saline solution and haemolymph were examined microscopically for the presence of Trypanosoma spp. The parasites were isolated and characterized using biological parameters and PCR. Triatomine blood meal sources were determined using ELISA. Results: A total of 14 palms were examined in which viable eggs of both species of vectors were found in 13 palms (92.85%). A total of 242 R. prolixus and 144 T. maculata adults were collected, of which 98% of R. prolixus and 70% of T. maculata individuals were infected by T. cruzi (TcI genotype) and 13% of R. prolixus individuals showed a mixed infection with T. rangeli, the other American trypanosome. ELISA testing for possible triatomine blood-meal sources revealed that these vectors are essentially eurytrophic and zoophilic, although R. prolixus also eventually used human blood as a nourishment source. Interpretation & conclusion: The results obtained suggest that C. nucifera is an appropriate vegetal niche for these triatomine species in Venezuela. The presence of this commercial palm may represent a useful environmental bioindicator of risk for Chagas disease.

ABSTRACT

Background: Surgical correction of congenital heart diseases (CHD) intends to improve quality of life (QL) in affected patients. In Chile this aspect has not been objectively evaluated, especially through comparison with normal children. Aim: to compare the quality of life in three groups of CHD patients with that of normal controls. Three aspects of QL were evaluated. Methods: three groups of patients with CHD (Ventricular septal defect, Tetralogy of Fallot, Single Ventricle) were compared to a group of healthy children from the south east area of Santiago. A standard QL questionnaire was used to evaluate school performance, physical and general daily activities and family life . A treadmill test with a modified Bruce protocol was used to evaluate physical capacity Results: There were 12 patients in the VSD, 12 in the Fallot, 15 in the Single Ventricle and 20 in the normal groups. 52 percent were males. Age at each school level, school performance (grades and failure rates) were similar across groups except for a lower performance in patients with Single Ventricle. Physical capacity (duration of stress test) was lower in patients with Single Ventricle (7.3 min average) compared to normal (11.75min), VSD (12.2min) and Tetralogy of Fallot (10.0 min). The results of these test correlated with subjective performance of physical capacity. Similarly patients with Single Ventricle perceived a greater limitation for daily activities (60 percent) compared to VSD (100 percent), Fallot's (89 percent) and healthy controls (89 percent). In general, parents of CHD patients perceived a greater limitation compared to their children. Family life was not different among groups. Conclusions: The perception of QL in these patients with corrected CHD did not differ compared to healthy controls. Objective evaluation showed a lower physical capacity in patients with a more severe type of CHD.
